Carol's Industria

Three months down and so many books read. I loved every part of it. I remember when people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up and as soon as they heard "English Literature Teacher" they would tell me in their warning voices, "Oh, you're gonna have to read aloooot of books!"

Psh! As if that ever scared me.....

I wanted to be in the train with an open book at all times, with 4 others on my lap. Filling my head with all the places I've never even had an option to go to. Involved with people that were complex and full of purpose. I love how literature unites us. Books literally as a human link.

One of my favorite books this semester is Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior: Memoir of a Girlhood Among Ghosts

Kingston's fictionalized memoir as a Chinese-American (herself as first-generation). It is divided into five different chapters, each telling the story of a specific woman.

1. No-Name Woman- Kingston's aunt, who after shaming her family by having a child out of wedlock, commits suicide. Not a spoiler! The chapter is mostly about how Kingston comes to terms with the small description above given by her mother.

2. Fa Mu Lan- This is my favorite chapter. If you ever saw the Disney version of Mulan, you'll forget all about it. This folk tale of a girl who trains in the mountains from age 7 to 15 to fight the corrupt baron disguised as a man. Amazing story!

3. Brave Orchid- Kingston's mother's tale in China, fighting ghosts, in medical school, and her growing reputation as a skillful midwife.

4. Moon Orchid - Moon Orchid's sister, who has been brought to live in the US by her sister and daugher, to reclaim her role as wife to a man who has re-married once he left China.  DRAMMMMAAAAA, but so powerful in the terms of female silencing.

5. This is Kingston's chapter where she finally confronts her mother for filling her world with stories (or talk-stories as she calls them), memories of China filled with ghosts, and silencing her daughter by her usual remark, "There’s no profit in raising girls. Better to raise geese than girls."

All in all, this book is so beautifully written, and completely inspired me to write more. I'm curious to know what ghosts are in my family :P

I'm sooo happy I have to re-read The Canterbury Tales, it's truly a beautiful work of literature. It's a shame Chaucer didn't finish it. My favorite part is Group A, (Prologue, Knight's Tale, Miller's Tale, Reeves's Tale, and Cook's Tale) specially the mockery of the Miller's tale to the Knight's Tale. EEK! I love courtly love!
I also love how puddles can make kids so happy. Walking with Bea and Wyatt, we agreed that we would put on our rain boots and "explore really good puddles!"
Cuties!

Are you kidding me?!!! ^ This is so cute :D

OOOOOO!!! My parent's birthday was this past week (both on the same week waaaaah?!) and so my sister and I got them lots of presents and a cute party. My mom got her first real modern piece of technology, (she LOOOOVES her Razr... lol) the iPad, and my dad got a whole bunch of sweaters, socks, and a coffee mug. Hey! He got an iPod touch from me just because! My mom was happy and it was nice to spend it with family and people that we care about.

In other news, my cold is finally reaching an end, after about 3 weeks. YAYYYY! Hopefully by this Sunday I'll be able to sing :) (I made the Hunter College choir! YAY go me!)

SAVE THE DATE!!!! December 10th 7PM (LOCATION TBA) Hunter Choir will present Mozart's Mass in C Minor.
It seriously makes me soooo happy and satisfied to be able to add my voice to such a beautiful composition.

I began a new semester at Hunter College and it feels great to just sit there and talk about books with other people who are just as passionate about them as I am. Its also so great that the classes I registered for are in the subject I want them to be.

For now I am taking "Black Women Writers", "Multi-Ethnic American Literature", and "Survey of English Literature", and my room is covered in books. These books are scattered on my desk, sit on my night table, rest on my floors, and overflow my tiny Ikea bookshelf. Late at night when I turn enough times to make myself dizzy, I look around my room, and I am happy with the books that make me feel warm inside. Some are old with all the love I've given them, other haven't been opened once. I think of my future, and I know that there will be hundreds of books to decorate most of the rooms in my apartment. Gosh I feel like an old lady with books for cats :)

I kind of can't stand the electronic books I see so many people on the train with. Their fancy metal and plastic surfaces with their tiny buttons and their unemotional screens will always be cold to the touch. Its like robots vs. people for me. These e-books won't have the crease on their spine to show how much the books have been used. Or the yellowing of the pages as time goes by. And no margins with notes and thoughts that show that people actually think while they read and are touched by the subject and can show reflections.

Am I rambling?

Indeed

:D

I need to sing a new song.
I need to paint.
I need to take pictures.
I need to dance.
I need to write.
<3

I want to sing on a stage for a gazillion people :(

New Video! Open Arms by Journey, but very close to Mariah Carey's version. I hope people like it and show it to other people :D

So as much as I hate to admit, I kinda like the Diva Hand.
What's a Diva Hand? The thing that Mariah Carey does when she sings that kinda looks like she might be getting her singing power through her hand gliding through the air.
I think it looks nice :)

New Video (where I show off my Diva Hand, realizing after uploading) in Singing Section. YAY! Check that out and ignore my ugly singing faces <3

is stuck in my head since last Thursday. I think it's time to record something :)

I made you think, you don't understand.

I used to think that happiness could only be something
That happened to somebody else
Everybody believed, everybody but me, yeah yeah
And I've been hurt so many times before,
That my hope was dying, so sick of trying
Everybody could see, everybody but me, yeah yeah
But then you came into my life, you opened up my softer side
And now I can see into your eyes
And suddenly, I realize.

I made you think, you don't understand
All the times you didn't understand,
Why you couldn't just be my man.
I made you think, you don't understand
There were many walls you had to climb,
If you really wanted to be mine.
I made you think, you don't understand
After all the hoops I put you through,
Now I see that I'm in love with you

Now, I hope you finally understand.

So many tears I've had to cry,
But you had many more of your own you had to try
But you stuck it out and you're here with me now, yeah yeah
And rememberin' the days I pushed away your love,
You called my bluff and you still stayed around,
Yeah you figured me out
Said, you got me down
And there's no way to lie to you, you know me better than I do

Baby, ooh, you see me through,
I'd be no good without you.

I made you think, you don't understand
All the times you didn't understand,
Why you just couldn't be my man
I made you think, you don't understand
There were many walls you had to climb (yeah)
If you really wanted to be mine (ooh)
I made you think, you don't understand
After all the hoops I put you through (through)
Now I see that I'm in love with you

Now, I hope you finally understand

Oh.

Baby, won't you listen now
Can't you see just what I'm talking about?
Said baby won't you listen now
Can't you see just what I'm talking about?

Time went on, and I was wrong
To keep my distance for so long.
So afraid, you wouldn't stay
But you never turned away

Always right by my side
You're forever in my life
Don't you go
'Cause now I know
That in you I found a home.

Now I can see into your eyes
Suddenly, I realize.

I made you think, you don't understand
All the times you didn't understand
Why you just couldn't be my man
I made you think, you don't understand
There were many walls you had to climb,
If you really wanted to be mine
I made you think, you don't understand
After all the hoops I put you through
Now I see I'm in love with you.

Now, I hope you finally understand.

I made you think, you don't understand.
